π§βπ¨ The Art Preserve of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center is the first museum in the country dedicated to artist-built environments, holding over 35 in its collection. The Preserve is a satellite campus of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in downtown Sheboygan.
πΏWhile there are paintings and drawings in this museum, what makes this collection unique is that many of the artists you find here went several steps further, filling their entire yards and homes with ceramics and sculptures indicative of their artistry. Some even turned their homes themselves into pieces of art!
π‘You may have even seen some of these artist-built environments around Wisconsin: They include grottoes like the Wegner Grotto in Sparta, concrete parks like the Fred Smithβs Wisconsin Concrete Park in Phillips, or entire homes like the Mary Nohl House, just north of Milwaukee. While there is a lot of focus on Wisconsin and Midwestern artists, artists from other locations are represented as well.
If you are interested in modern, folk, or regional art, this museum is a must-visit! And donβt forget to check out the bathrooms on the first and third floors, which were designed by artists as tribute to the pieces in the museum!

Sheboygan Visual Artists (SVA) is located on 12th & Erie in Sheboygan. The location is a character-filled urban chic gallery and studio space housed in a historic manufacturing building. Featuring tall white walls, ceilings, skylights, and scuffed wood floors, it offers a truly unique ambiance. In addition to original artworks, visitors can purchase note cards, jewelry, prints, and more. Their mission is to empower visual artists through professional growth and collaboration, create opportunities for the community to engage with and appreciate visual arts, as well as showcase member artists and their creations.

Did you know there are over 10,000 shipwrecks on the bottom of the Great Lakes? The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, and they have seen centuries of exploration, trade, and recreation. They have also left an impressive trail of maritime cultural resources along Wisconsinβs Great Lakes shorelines. Many of the shipwrecks on the Great Lakes are wellpreserved, thanks to the cold, fresh water that slows down the decay process. These sites hold great national historical and archaeological significance, and they are also world-class recreational spots.

In order to safeguard these locations, Governor Walker submitted a national marine sanctuary nomination to NOAA in 2014 for Wisconsinβs coastal communities. In 2017, NOAA proposed the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary, which will protect 37 historic shipwrecks and other underwater heritage sites across 1,075 square miles.

Book a shipwreck dive charter through Great Lakes Diving Center or simply walk through a shipwreck that is on display in Sheboygan. The Lottie Cooper was a three-masted schooner that capsized and sank just off the Sheboygan harbor in 1894. Lottie was discovered during the construction of the marina, and she has been reassembled at Deland Park, right along the Lakefront.

We take our brats seriously in Sheboygan. In 1970, Sheboygan battled Bucyrus, Ohio, for the title of Bratwurst Capital of the World. After a grueling duel, the Sheboygan Press reported on August 14, 1970, that Judge John Bolgert had rendered an official decision bestowing the title upon Sheboygan and barring all other claimers from using it.ββββββββ
